Effects of High Temperatures and Heat on Car Batteries

Each cell of an automotive battery is filled with pure water that facilitates chemical reactions involving lead acid and hydrogen gas. On a hot day, the fluid level inside the cell could drop because of evaporation and acceleration of reactions.

You will have to add distilled or deionized water to ensure that the battery continues to perform properly during the summer months. It's absolutely critical to avoid tap water or bottled water that might contain impurities, such as minerals and other dissolved chemicals. High temperatures could also speed up the accumulation of corrosive elements on the terminals of the battery. You could scrub and scrape off the debris with a cloth or other basic tools that are used for cleaning components under the hood.

Our service center here at Volvo Cars of Santa Monica offers battery testing and maintenance for various types of cars. Located in Santa Monica, CA, we also sell new vehicles that are equipped with durable batteries and alternators.
